The Haunted Castle (1897)

Directed and Produced by Georges Méliès

The remake of Georges Méliès’ 1896 classic. This one doesn’t feel as revolutionary since its basically a continuation. 5/10

Faust: Appearance of Mephistopheles (1897)

Directed by Alexandre Promio and Georges Hatot

First-ever flop. Doesn’t do anything new with the genre. It's not scary at all, this is for babies. 2/10

The X-Ray Fiend (1897)

Directed by George Albert Smith

This one is pretty creative, but nothing super crazy. 6/10

The Dancing Skeleton(1897)

Directed by Auguste Lumiére and Louis Lumiére.

A stop-motion skeleton dancing. Not as cool as the cartoon one though. 5/10

The Cavalier’s Dream (1898)

Directed by Edwin S. Porter

This is interesting and would be creepy as shit if it was 1898 and someone told you to watch this with no context. 8/10

The Devil in a Convent (1899)

Directed by Georges Méliès

This one starts off a little slow but damn does it pay off. The devil and his hijinks in a church. 8/10

The Pillar of Fire (1899)

Directed by Georges Méliès

A cool set and pretty great special effects for 1899. One of the best of most impressive ultra-early films up to this point. 8/10
